Thailand is known for its island destinations and the three most famous islands for 20 and 30 something travelers are Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. They all are lovely and have something different to offer.
I personally love Koh Tao out of the three, an island I didn’t visit on my first Thailand trip, but the island that kept pulling me back over and over.
Before we read further, I’d like to share quick info about the three islands that form a trio in the Gulf of Thailand:
- Koh Samui: the most visited out of these three but most developed. Not my cup of tea. The only island out of this trip that has an airport.
- Koh Phangan: famous for its wild culture, full moon parties but also a spiritual hippie vibe. I hated the Full Moon party by the way.
- Koh Tao: this is the most beautiful one out of the three for me because I felt it has real laidback island vibes, and popular for diving and snorkeling. (The name means Turtle island)
Koh Samui is the only island where you can reach by other, for the other two, you need to get on a ferry from either Samui or Surat Thani, or Chumphon. The shortest ferry ride is obviously from Samui.
So now, picture this – you have just arrived at Koh Samui Airport, stepped onto the open-air runway, and probably thought, this already feels like a holiday postcard. Palm trees, a warm breeze, staff with easy smiles, and that relaxed island energy hit you instantly.
But if Koh Tao is the real goal, you might wonder how to get from this pretty little airport to a totally different island known for turquoise water and chilled-out beach life. Oh, and a paradise for divers, both advanced and rookie.
Here is the good news. It is easier than it looks, and you are not required to be some type of logistics genius to figure it out. By far the most popular, stress-free option is the Koh Samui to Koh Tao ferry, which connects the two islands seamlessly and is designed with travelers in mind.
Let’s break the whole thing down so that you can go from runway chic to beach towel without overthinking it.
Getting from Samui Airport to Pier Without Losing Your Mind
Once you exit the airport at Samui, you are not far from the main ferry piers. The most commonly used one for Koh Tao routes is the Maenam Pier. It does sound far, but really, it is not.
You can take a taxi waiting outside the terminal, use a shared minibus transfer from the airport, or book a combined transfer and ferry ticket online.
For most travelers, it’s much easier to book in advance: You walk out, show your booking, and someone guides you to your ride. No price debates. No confusion.
Travel time from the airport to the pier usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic. This feels quick, especially when you are excited.
The Ferry Ride That Feels Like Part of the Holiday
This isn’t one of those cramped boat rides where you count minutes until it’s over. The ferry ride itself is comfortable and, quite surprisingly, enjoyable.
Most ferries used between Samui and Koh Tao are modern, air-conditioned speedboats or catamarans. You get padded seating, clean toilets, and sometimes a small snack counter. Several of these boats have open deck areas where you can step out, feel the breeze, and take photos.
It takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the circumstances. Within this time, you will pass smaller islands, watch changing shades of blue water, and observe other boats crossing the Gulf of Thailand. It feels more like sightseeing than transport.
If you are prone to seasickness, sit more towards the center of the boat where the movement is lighter; also, keep a light layer on hand, as the air conditioning can be surprisingly cold.
Arrival in Koh Tao: You Instantly Feel You’re On Island Time
Arriving at Mae Haad Pier in Koh Tao, the instant feeling is one of calm. This island is quieter, smaller, and more personal.
Immediately off the pier, you will find shared pickup trucks and motorbike taxis waiting for you. Several hotels and hostels will offer low-cost or free pickups as well if you let them know you’re coming. Depending on whether you’re headed to Sairee Beach, Chalok Bay, or one of the other coves, the ride takes 10 to 20 minutes.
This is usually when the shoulders drop and holiday mode fully switches on.
Ferry Timings and Tickets Without the Headache
Ferries run frequently throughout the day, but more departures are in the morning. If you desire to have a complete afternoon on the beach, catch an early boat.
Booking in advance is smart during busy travel months, which range from December to April and July to August. Tickets are easy to store on your phone.
In case of a late afternoon landing, always check the ferry schedule in advance. Missing the last ferry means an overnight stay in Samui, which may be fun, but not always planned.
Small Things That Make the Journey Easier
Bring cash for snacks and small fees, have sunscreen in your bag for the open deck, bring motion sickness tablets in case, and don’t overpack since you will move luggage a few times.
These little habits go on to smooth the whole experience.
One small but lovely detail is how friendly everything feels along the way. The staff are patient, the signs are easy to follow, and even fellow travelers will help out their brethren. It turns travel into a shared little adventure.
Is It Really Worth the Effort?
The short answer is yes, always.
Koh Tao is known for its relaxed vibe, clear water, coral reefs, and beaches that feel personal rather than crowded. It has a mix of backpackers, honeymooners, solo travellers, and families, which tells you a lot.
Getting here from Samui is not a hassle. From the open-air airport to the sea breeze on the ferry to your first barefoot steps on the sand, everything flows seamlessly. By the time you’re lying on a beach in Koh Tao, you can barely remember any of the travel stress you imagined.
